Stop and Smell the Roses
Artist Statement
One of my favorite places to visit is the botanical gardens. I literally swoon over the lush colors in the fields and am consistently in awe of the myriad of varieties from beautifully ordinary to majestically exotic… Simply put, flowers make me happy.
Upon gazing at flowers recently, I started noticing characteristics that made each one unique. I noticed that no two were exactly the same, that they were fragile, delicate, and each one gives off a different scent all its own. They all have shapes that are unique to its 'culture' and if you look carefully, each petal tells its own story. The more I pondered, the more I realized how similar people are to flowers.
Then it hit me… Had I ever walked into a room full of people and been as amazed as I am when I see a bed of fresh hydrangeas? Do I marvel at the intricacies of a person as much as I do a bunch of gladiolas? Do I nurture the hearts of people, or even myself for that matter, as gently as I would care for a purple water lily?
In the wake of current events and all too familiar historical ones that sparked movements like Black Lives Matter and Black Girls Rock, these paintings seek to challenge viewers to pause, notice, and appreciate the beauty in themselves and of those that they encounter. One of the great joys in life is to love and be loved in return. One of my biggest challenges has been to open my heart to truly receive the type of love that I so freely give. This series marked my quest to understand how I want to be loved, how I want to love, and to embrace that kinda love daily. I asked many people what kind of love they desired. The messages were beautifully bold, dynamic, loud, vivid, humorous, and full of heart and depth.

One of the great joys in life is to love and be loved in return. One of my biggest challenges has been to open my heart to truly receive the type of love that I so freely give. This series marked my quest to understand how I want to be loved, how I want to love, and to embrace that kinda love daily. I asked many people what kind of love they desired. The messages were beautifully bold, dynamic, loud, vivid, humorous, and full of heart and depth.

So… what are you saying?
Near the end of last year, I had enough… enough of living on a hamster wheel, repeating the same cycle over and over again… I had moved to another whole country to get off the wheel, but found myself right back on another one… I was ready to break free, to get out of this container that I had inherited… Or did I actually put myself in it?
So what am I saying?
I spent many years of my life being closed… and many years saying no… and for what? To keep up appearances with my family and friends? To fashion myself into someone that I thought I should be?
While taking a painting class one day, the instructor told us to paint a picture of a bottle… I found the perfect one… while painting I decided to add a few elements to it and it ended up with lips inside… (I’m a sucker for lips, especially if they look like mine)… then my spirit spoke to me and, on the canvas, I begin to write the words, BE OPEN…
I stepped back and looked at it, finding it completely oxymoronic… a closed bottle… it spoke to me…
There it was, a message longing to get out… a story longing to be told… a message so misshapen by its container that it forgot what it was supposed to say, how it was supposed to look… it forgot who it was and there it was, stuck…
So what am I saying?
From that moment forward, I challenged myself to be more open… whenever I am at a crossroads or facing something new, I speak those words over myself and allow it to be my spirits cry… as a result, I can honestly say that I’ve had many more meaningful experiences and have come to know myself and others in new ways…
By being open, I’m allowing my message to live, to love, and to be free… by being open, Im allowing my message to have a voice and to be heard- or not… because while people don’t have to listen, your message is so important that you still have to speak…
This series is my reminder that you have a message… that you are a message… and that by being open, you liberate your message, and consequently, you liberate your entire world…

Stories come in different genres, different complexities… from picture books to technical books… from romance to graphic novels… from poetry anthologies to magazine articles… and a whole lot in between… sometimes we skim… other times we sit a narrative aside because we’re not ready for it yet or ever… still other times, we dive in so deeply and get so hooked that we can’t let go until every word has been read and every page changes the fabric of our beings…
And while every ‘book’ may not be your preference or may not be on your level, our lives are still enriched through the power of story.
You are a story. Your life, full of its climaxes and resolutions… its beginnings, middles, and endings… it’s antagonists and shifting characters… your story.
And although every chapter of your story deserves to be read, the truth is, you’re not for everyone… and while you may have the desire to read all the ‘books’, the truth is, everyone of them is not for you.
Nevertheless, I’ve found that when I take the time to pick up a ‘book’ and actually open its cover (especially my autobiography), whether I decide to finish it or not, I am forever changed. Changed because, if only for a moment, I’ve stepped into another dimension… peeked into a new world…gained a new respect for another way of being… and ultimately, gained a new perspective and respect for myself…

“Don’t you know yet? It is your light that lights the world?” -Rumi
Light is a form of energy and there are many different types- a variety of wattages, colors, and levels of warmth. The light in a space can either fit your mood or damper it. It can be either too dim or too bright, and there are times that we have to adjust the brightness so that we can see more clearly or not much at all…
People are sources of light. We come in a variety of shapes, colors, and degrees of warmth. There are those who connect with our souls in powerful ways and wake us up. Ones that inspire us to grow, to reach new heights, or to just be. There are others who fill us with possibilities, fear, longing, love... and believe it or not, we are all these things for other people as well.
These paintings, full of color and expression, were years in the making. Through mixed media collages using acrylic paint, charcoal, acrylic markers, pen, and textured paper, this series explores my interpretation of the light seen in everyday people and common materials. It channels the energy of African masks while playing with the idea of what it means to surround yourself with the light of the ingenuity of the people who mothered creation. It explores old family photos and the light that fueled children of sharecroppers with audacious hope and the determination to migrate north for a brighter future. It seeks to capture the light one discovers in themselves when they leave their comfort zone and begin to see the world in new ways. Overall, this series attempts to embrace the light of the benefactors of a history full of depth, strength, heart, and joy.
I now realize that this series had taken so long to be birthed because I was on a journey to recognize my own light. It tells a story of a journey that has taken me around the world and safely home, over and over again… A journey that prompted me to take leaps of faith in order to shine in new places and in new ways... A journey that has not only challenged me to connect with things that light me up, but that has also illuminated the light that has been inside of me all along. They were painted as a reminder to pause and remember the beauty of where you are from, to fully appreciate the necessity for where you are now, and to find new parts of yourself to set sweet fires everywhere you go.

Stop and Smell the Roses
Artist Statement
One of my favorite places to visit is the botanical gardens. I literally swoon over the lush colors in the fields and am consistently in awe of the myriad of varieties from beautifully ordinary to majestically exotic… Simply put, flowers make me happy.
Upon gazing at flowers recently, I started noticing characteristics that made each one unique. I noticed that no two were exactly the same, that they were fragile, delicate, and each one gives off a different scent all its own. They all have shapes that are unique to its 'culture' and if you look carefully, each petal tells its own story. The more I pondered, the more I realized how similar people are to flowers.
Then it hit me… Had I ever walked into a room full of people and been as amazed as I am when I see a bed of fresh hydrangeas? Do I marvel at the intricacies of a person as much as I do a bunch of gladiolas? Do I nurture the hearts of people, or even myself for that matter, as gently as I would care for a purple water lily?
In the wake of current events and all too familiar historical ones that sparked movements like Black Lives Matter and Black Girls Rock, these paintings seek to challenge viewers to pause, notice, and appreciate the beauty in themselves and of those that they encounter. Each painting in this series uses mixed media (paper, textures, etc.) and is named after a line in an original poem which celebrates life and love. Artist Statement
“Don’t you know yet? It is your light that lights the world?” -Rumi
Light is a form of energy and there are many different types- a variety of wattages, colors, and levels of warmth. The light in a space can either fit your mood or damper it. It can be either too dim or too bright, and there are times that we have to adjust the brightness so that we can see more clearly or not much at all…
People are sources of light. We come in a variety of shapes, colors, and degrees of warmth. There are those who connect with our souls in powerful ways and wake us up. Ones that inspire us to grow, to reach new heights, or to just be. There are others who fill us with possibilities, fear, longing, love... and believe it or not, we are all these things for other people as well.
These paintings, full of color and expression, were years in the making. Through mixed media collages using acrylic paint, charcoal, acrylic markers, pen, and textured paper, this series explores my interpretation of the light seen in everyday people and common materials. It channels the energy of African masks while playing with the idea of what it means to surround yourself with the light of the ingenuity of the people who mothered creation. It explores old family photos and the light that fueled children of sharecroppers with audacious hope and the determination to migrate north for a brighter future. It seeks to capture the light one discovers in themselves when they leave their comfort zone and begin to see the world in new ways. Overall, this series attempts to embrace the light of the benefactors of a history full of depth, strength, heart, and joy.
I now realize that this series had taken so long to be birthed because I was on a journey to recognize my own light. It tells a story of a journey that has taken me around the world and safely home, over and over again… A journey that prompted me to take leaps of faith in order to shine in new places and in new ways... A journey that has not only challenged me to connect with things that light me up, but that has also illuminated the light that has been inside of me all along. They were painted as a reminder to pause and remember the beauty of where you are from, to fully appreciate the necessity for where you are now, and to find new parts of yourself to set sweet fires everywhere you go.

miss(ed) America is the 2nd installment of the Stop and Smell the Roses series. It speaks to the Black and Brown women who have shaped this country, but whose efforts, sacrifices, and oftentimes, beauty, still remain invisible. Like the 1st installment, paintings were named after words in the following poem.

Artist Statement
We hear a lot about finding your joy, about allowing joy to lead you, and about the importance of being joyful. What is less discussed is the journey it takes to uncover and unmask those things that bring us true joy. And even less discussed is how we find our way out of the muck and webs and darkness that comes with life. How do we find joy in the midst of depression, heartache, and suffering? How do we find joy when eating bland food or reading a boring book? We remember… that even if pain lasts forever, we can still feel. We remember… that hearts break and ache because we are blessed enough to have them. We remember… that eating bland food is better than eating no food. We remember… that the sun rises everyday…
And then we fight, little by little, piece by piece, searching for simple moments that make us smile… your favorite dress, your favorite color, your favorite person, your favorite song, your favorite piece of art… And then when we invite those things into our lives, we follow them, and we choose them over and over and over and over and over again...
This series marks the beginning of my own journey to dive into the pain and find light despite the fear, to listen to what really makes my heart beat, and to embrace what keeps a smile on my face. And for this journey, I’m committing to allow joy… sweet, sweet joy... to be my compass.
